|BIGGEST WAVES IN TWO DECADES ON THE NORTH SHORE OF OAHU
The waves were anticipated to be fifty feet high last week due to an extreme low pressure system. I was in Hawaii visiting my mother and had driven to the north shore of Oahu to see the biggest waves since 1986. I stood with some of my family next to an attractive, wide-eyed couple visiting from Mexico City on a road next to a deserted beach. Gusts of wind
were blowing at forty miles at hour, tearing off palm fronds while line after line of churning, crashing waves reached the sand and black volcanic rocks. The road was lined with cars filled with people who had come to see this wild and beautiful sight. Because so much white water was being pushed around, the waves reached thirty feet, not fifty, but were unsurfable and dangerous. I arrived back in Puerto Vallarta a week later and was told that there had been a huge rainstorm here at the same time Hawaii was experiencing high waves and light rains. On almost the same latitude, 20.6667 degrees north for Puerto Vallarta versus 21.3000 degrees north for Hawaii, the weather patterns for both places are often very similar.

“New counts show that the Monarch population returning to Mexico has been cut in half (after another drop of 50% the year before that)…The average monarch count over the last 15 years translates into about 350 million butterflies. This year only 33 million made it to Mexico. Much of the blame may lie with the wide-scale adoption of genetically modified crops that are resistant to the weed-killer glyphosate, also known as Round Up. This change in our agricultural system has led to the near extermination of milkweed, which Monarchs rely on, from huge swaths of our country.”
