LAGO DE ATITLÁN 3 DIÁS DESPÚES DEL ERUPCIÓN DEL VOLCAN “FUEGO” |
6 DIÁS DESPUÉS DE LA ERUPCIÓN |
EN FRENTE DE LA IGLESIA EN EL PUEBLO DE SANTA CATARINA – LAGO DE ATITLÁN |
We arrived in Guatemala City three days after the eruption. The two-hour drive to the small town of Panajachel on the shore of lake Atitlán was a grey and smoky-smelling one. For the first two days, San Pedro and Atitlán volcanoes were dark shadows across the approximate 300 meter-deep lake. As there is no outlet for lake Atitlán, the water level continues to rise.

TOMANDO UNA LANCHA A SAN ANTONIO EN EL LAGO DE ATITLÁN
A small, sacred island for the Mayans lies 50 feet below the surface. Destroyed by a catastrophic event in approximately 250 A.D. (the height of the Mayan empire), scuba divers have found parts of buildings, ceremonial stones and fragments of pottery.

ANTES DE ENTRAR EN LANCHA ENTRE LOS DOS VOLCANES
On the third morning, a cold wind the night before had blown the ash away and we awoke to brilliant blue skies, a glittering dark blue lake and a spectacular view of the two volcanoes.
TIENDITA EN SANTIAGO – LAGO DE ATITLÁN |
At the nearby lakeside villages of Santa Catarina and Santiago, indigenous women dress in deep blue or purple huipiles (embroidered blouses) and cortes (lengths of cotton wrapped around the body to make a skirt), reflecting the blue beauty of lake Atitlán.
In the market place, a restaurant owner proudly posed his Mayan profile.

RESCUED AND ADOPTED: A homeless cat living outdoors at los Tules condos – by Deanna McQuillan, who is visiting from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Deanna has been calling the cat “Gato,” even though she thought the cat might be pregnant and didn´t know a female cat would be a “gata.” After I mentioned that there was a sure way to know if the cat were male, Deanna said she hadn´t picked up the cat yet. After being shaved at Colina clinic on Saturday, a scar confirmed “Gata” had already been spayed. She will fly back with her new family the end of March.
