GATHERING CLOUDS – COSTCO PARKING LOT AT 7:30 IN THE MORNING |
White clouds and grey clouds gather in the mornings in anticipation of the rainy season, and later disperse. Air temperature is in the high 80´s, with humidity ranging between 60% and 70%. Water temperature in the bay is about 80 degrees farenheit and the manta rays and humans are enjoying it. Couples kiss beneath trees in the coolness of the isla Cuale. It´s unseasonably hot and humid.

MEGAN Y LESLIE EN FRENTE DE LA ESCUELA EN VOLCANES |
Public school days are split in half between morning and afternoon classes. Eighty to eighty-five percent of the public school students (plus a small number of adults) go to the Community Education after or before their regular classes. The Education Project was founded in 2011 with the intention of breaking the cycle of poverty and is funded by Rotary Clubs and various individuals. In addition to Megan, there are two other teachers who give courses in computer and English without charge. These classes are not offered at the public school. There are families so impoverished that children are sent to school in the mornings without having eaten breakfast and to the afternoon sessions without lunch.
COCINA/RESTAURANTE EN LA ESCUELA DE VOLCANES |
The Education Project donated a small kitchen/cafeteria to the public school. Scouts from Canada came down to start the the building, which was finished by the families of students. Twenty-five to thirty of the children from the poorest families are given either an oatmeal with raisins breakfast or a taco lunch. Both meals are served with water. The other children either bring their meals or are able to purchase three tacos (with water) for four pesos. There are also snacks to buy. I enjoyed a delicious taco lunch (25 pesos each for visitors) and a refreshing agua de jamaica (hibiscus water) on Monday and Wednesday. http://www.volcanesproject.com/
VOLCANES |
Leslie gave her education presentation to the morning students at the government school, and on Wednesday, we were in the Education Project building for the first day of the free spay/neuter clinics. Irene of Puro Gato brought twelve 8-10 week-old beautiful kittens, all of whom will be available for adoption next week.
GATITOS RESCATADOS DE PURO GATO – EN ADOPCIÓN |
Although there was a long line of adults in children waiting for us before 9 AM, only two or three pet owners were turned away. At thirty-nine cats and dogs, we were over our limit for the day. A seven or eight-year old girl, whom Megan said was an excellent student, walked unprompted over to the donation box and put in a few coins. A mother of one of the boy students was watching and asked her son and a friend go to do the same.
REGISTRANDO MASCOTAS – VOLCANES |
I noticed a medium-size, tan dog standing nearby that was obviously in heat. She was alone and wasn´t being registered. I asked a woman standing near the clinic if she knew whose dog it was. She pointed to a sweet-looking young girl with dust-caked hair in a dirty pink t-shirt. The dog had followed the girl to school. I told the woman that the dog needed to be spayed and then kept in an enclosed space for two weeks. On the streets, not only was the dog guaranteed to get pregnant, she was at great risk for TVT (transmissible veneral tumor). If spayed and then let loose, although the dog couldn´t get pregnant, she was subject to not only infection roaming the dusty roads, but would definitely be mounted and at great risk for injury due to the recent surgery. The scent of estrus lingers for two weeks. The woman shook her head and said the child´s mother wouldn´t care for the dog if she couldn´t care for her daughter. After I arrived back home and after sending sending emails to Megan and a few animal rescuers, Soraya of Puro Gato very generously agreed to foster this nice dog. “Canela” was spayed Thursday morning, and Frank Ohly, one of our regular star volunteers, gave her a ride to Soraya´s home that afternoon. In two weeks, Canela will be returned by Megan to the family, and if this hasn´t contacted TVT, Canela´s life has been saved.

“CANELA” EN CASA PUENTE DE PURO GATO PARA 2 SEMANAS |
I asked several residents why this far away from everything neighborhood was given the name of “volcanes” (“volcanoes”). Shrugs of shoulders and shy smiles. No one knew. Later in the day, when I was taking a photograph of boys in the rocky dirt school playground, I noticed the pointy little hills behind it, and thought perhaps this was why the place had gotten its unlikely name.
Thank you to Megan for contacting PEACEAnimals for a clinic in Volcanes. Thank you for the extraordinary work you are doing for the community. Thank you for helping save the children.

BLANKITA RESCATADA Y ADOPTADA |
ADOPTED: “Blankita,” the little Chihuahua mix rescued by Karla in Boca de Tomatlán. Patricia Lupton fostered her and found a very good home for her on ranch north of Ixtapa. Blankita took immediately to the autistic young son in the family and reportedly loves being with different kinds of animals. Patricia very generously donated a bag of food and 1,000 pesos for vet expenses.
