Although there are more than twelve drummers drumming, the twelve days of Christmas in Mexico refer to the pilgrimages honoring “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” the “Mother of  Mexico.”  At six o´clock in the evening and contining for twelve nights,  thousands of “pilgrims” make their way past food stands through the middle of town to the very pretty church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Puerto Vallarta.

Pilgrims are composed of colonia Mexico and Aztec-costumed dancers and musicians, plus groups belonging to marathon runners, hospitals, schools, colonias, etc.  The song they are all singing is “La Guadalupana.”

IXTAPA is a municipality approximately thirty-five minutes northeast of Puerto Vallarta and feels like its own town.  If one drives north from Vallarta, the turn to the east is at Home Depot, continuing up a two-lane, fruit-stand lined road towards San Sebastián.

IXTAPA

VISTA DE LA IGLESIA DE LA DELEGACIÓN

A right turn on calle Independencia takes one to the center of Ixtapa, where the plaza, church, basketball court and the “delegacion” (local government building) are all clustered together.  The clinic, which was 2 1/2 days instead of 3 1/2 because the second room of the delgación was needed on Wednesday, took place in a small room partially filled with upside down chairs, bicycles and a couple of pitchforks.  In spite of the tight space, spirits were high, as were the numbers of animals sterilized.

JOSUE SALYANO CON DOS DE SUS CUATRO PERROS – IXTAPA

On Thursday, I met Josue Salyano, who had volunteered via FB to bring lunches for the four members of the vet team on two days.  He brought two of his dogs, deposited a very generous donation of 400 pesos in the donation box and said he would be back with two more of his dogs on Friday.

DESPUÉS DE CIRUGÍA – CLINICA EN IXTAPA – ESTA PERRA TIENE TVT.  SI FUERA OPERADA ANTES DE SU PRIMER CELO, NO HUBIERA TENIDO CONTACTO SEXUAL NI ESTOS TUMORES MALIGNOS.

An attractive couple brought their two dogs to the clinic in the back of a truck.  The male was healthy but the female, a German Shepherd mix, was sick with TVT (transmissible veneral tumor).  If she had been spayed before she had come into her first heat, she would have been safe.  The dog´s  owners will take her to the vet to start chemotherapy right away.  Often successful in shrinking and destroying the tumors,  this is a treatment most pet owners in Mexico cannot afford.

FELICIDAD.  PERRA DESPUÉS DE CIRUGÍA Y YA LISTA PARA REGRESAR A SU CASA.  BLISS.  DOG AND OWNER WAITING TO BE DRIVEN HOME AFTER BEING SPAYED AT IXTAPA CLINIC

WET PET PICNIC:  An unusual rain began to fall shortly before 11 AM on Saturday, December 3rd, causing attendance at the 11th annual Pet Picnic to be lower than usual.

Attendees sat indoors for the first time,  causing lunchers who were unaware of the fundraiser to comment on the many dogs at the restaurant that day.   Pamela Evans handed me a bag containing Dollar Store purchases of collars and leashes for PEACEAnimals clinics and a bottle of cosequin to Linda Lestz for Santos.  This the beloved Bloodhound who was living on the streets in el tuito about three years ago. He was limping after having been hit by a car and someone had cut both of his ears off with a machete.  I took him to the PEACEAnimals clinic in el tuito and was able to find a foster home for him before Linda and her husband adopted him. Linda says that ceosequin (glucosomine/chondroitin/MSM/), not sold in Mexico, is helping enormously with Santo´s arthritis. Santos, wearing a large red ribbon, looks handsome and happy after his two-and-a-half years of a very good life in las juntas and los veranos.  He was making low hounddog barks for the doggy treats and turkey and roast beef sandwiches.

Thank you to Laura Gelezunas and Tari Bowman, owner of Daiquiri Dick´s for organizing the Pet Picnic.  Amount of monies raised will be reported in a future blog.

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  Leslie Caratachea, vet tech and director of PEACEAnimals education program, visited escuela Secundaria Técnica 56 on Wednesday, November30th  and presented to 110 students.
