the last processions of the twelve days of Chrismtas began. Accompanied by the clanging, clattering and chiming of church bells, thousands of pilgrims walked north on Morelos street as they sang their way to the church.
Some carried flowers and baskets of food to leave at the altar as tributes to the Mother of Mexico. In the crush of people moving slowly forward, a young crippled man in a white, sweat-soaked shirt made the journey on his knees over two flattened cardboard boxes that a friend kept replacing in front of him. “Aztec” dancers prepared copal to burn inside the church while a small, costume child banged on a tall drum. It was the last day of a festive and semi-religious celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Longing for a wintry experience, I drove with a couple of friends up to the foothills of the Sierra Madres. Two hours later, we arrived at the turn onto the beautiful, old cobbled road bordered on both sides by parrota trees that leads into San Sebastián.
Stopping at the coffee mill, we noticed the brown and white male dog with bright red genital tumors. He trotted in front of our car as as we drove over the old stone and mortar bridge into the small former mining town of San Sebastian, where he will infect other dogs with TVT – malignant venereal tumors.

Instead of the cold day we were expecting in the quiet, small town of cobbled streets and red tile roofs, it was a balmy one. We wandered the narrow roads, admiring properties bordered by old stone walls, trees heavy with oranges, and lines of laundry hanging out to dry in the winter sun.
At the plaza, there are a couple of shops selling jams, silver jewelry, carved obsidian objects and charming cotton dolls made by one of the local women. There are also a few restaurants, including a very good Italian one with a pretty garden. We chose a small, family-style Mexican restaurant where the food was delicious and very inexpensive.

In a yoga class days later in the week, the instructor asked us to say a silent mantra of “all is well.” I felt an immediate sadness when I heard this and thought “all is not well.” All is not well in Aleppo. All is not well for the dolphins in Taiji. All is not well for many people and places and animals. Walking home after class, I thought of a Christmas talk I heard in church so many years ago. Paraphrasing:
The wise men weren´t called that because they were the wisest men. There were other men much wiser than these three. But they made a journey and followed the brightest star in the sky because they believed someone they would love was waiting for them. And they followed a star within themselves and kept their stars bright in the darkness.

There have been no PEACEanimals clinics these past two weeks, as Pets for Life, the vet team with whom we have a work agreement, was operating at their own clinics in the state of Nayarit. The team is paid there by local groups or government agencies.
PEACEANIMALS SPAYED AND NEUTERED 5,403 CATS AND DOGS IN 2016! Our vet team is fantastic, pet owners are becoming more and more responsible. We are grateful to all who volunteer, who bring meals, who financially support these clinics, who adopt cats and dogs here and who take the time to read our blog because you care about Mexico and you care about animals.
