Ten minutes after leaving Boca de Tomatlán in a panga, we began to see dolphins. It wasn´t possible to see them swimming below us because the water in Banderas Bay was a deep emerald green, but there were many shiny, sleek dark grey dolphins on top. Some were swimming in close tandem with
their small calves, while other individuals were making graceful, curving leaps out of the water before gliding across the glittering bay.
We motored to los arcos (“the arches”) national marine park, the rocky outcroppings where waves have carved out arches. High above us, fluffy white pelican chicks were being fed in their nests. Blue footed boobies and terns were making their own nests in close by. The water surrounding los arcos is supposedly the deepest in the bay – 1,600 feet.

LOS ARCOS |
More than a mile from the shore, the water surface temperature was 71 degrees farenheit. Deeper down, the water is much cooler, but soon too warm for the humpback whales, who will begin swimming north. They will have accomplished what they made the long journey south for – to breed and to give birth.
Back on the beach, a large Ridgeback/Shepherd-mix dog was nursing her ten multi-colored puppies. They had been born five days before on the sand underneath the Embarcadero restaurant. Mama and babies were t brought two days after this photo was taken to the centro de acopio, the no-kill pound. They will all be sterilized, vaccinated and available for adoption in a few weeks. AZUL TURQUESA – ATRÁS DE LA CLÍNICA |
Azul Turquesa is an hour´s drive southeast of Vallarta, reached after winding through small towns and patches of empty fields and fields planted with mango trees and corn. There is nothing turquoise-blue in sight. The clinic was requested, organized and staffed with volunteers by the same individuals that organized the clinic in San Juan de Abajo, which is a bit further east. The small group of animal advocates also paid the vet team for the extra driving time and gasoline and provided lunches. The operating room was in the communal “salon,” and kept cool with several fans blowing. On the small, green front lawn in front of the building, a long recovery table was set up for post-surgery procedures. One of the dog owners, a woman in her forties with a fluffy, highlighted pony tail, attentively massaged and caressed her blonde Cocker Spaniel, repeating over and over, “O, mi amor, mi angel,” as the dog slept away.
As I was leaving the clinic, I saw Vicky Boyd, who lives part time in Mezcales and is a very active dog rescuer. She had brought Marta, a Mexican neighbor, and her two dogs to have them sterilized. Vicky showed me the below photograph and asked if I knew who could help. She had seen the emaciated dog a few days earlier at a mechanic´s shop in San Vicente. When she asked if she could help “Laila,” the owner´s main concern was apparently for himself, asking if he was “in trouble.”
