After a torrential 5 AM rain on Tuesday morning and after a 7:30 AM yoga class at DavannaYoga,
I took a walk on the isla Cuale. Green parrots were joyfully squawking overhead, two brown squirrels scampered quickly across the bough of a tree and the sweet smell of earth permeated the tiny island. More heavy rains followed on other days, often accompanied by thunder and lightning. Gardens, parks and hills are gloriously green and glistening.

Temperatures have dropped from the low 90´s to the mid-80´s and humidity has fallen from 86% to about 60%. Puerto Vallarta is bustling with tourists from the U.S. and Canada and from Guadalajara and other Mexican towns that don´t require flying. This is a gorgeous time of year.

After returning from northern California, where the cold temperatures of the Pacific mean very brief dips in the ocean. I´ve resumed my early morning smiling swims at Punta Negra with our dogs. Swims at Conchas Chinas are without dogs, as they are only allowed on leash there. Our gardener told me he had seen at least ten dolphins close to Lindo Mar restaurant on Conchas Chinas beach at 7 AM one morning this week, and I was envious that I hadn´t been there. My dream is to swim with dolphins in the wild.

Fluvial is the name of the very nice, upper middle-class neighborhood next to Costco. The colonia is situated between the two main streets in and out of Vallarta – Avenida México and Avenida Francisco Villa – and is half-way from centro to the airport. It is a quiet and immaculate place, with many palms and leafy trees, empty, grassy lots and views of the jagged foothills of the Sierra Madres.

Nayhomy de Fejardo offered the garage of her pretty, white stucco home with a red tile roof on río Cutzamala street as a clinic location. Nayhomy owns fifteen cats and has visited PEACEAnimals clinics in the past. Although the word “fluvial” relates to rivers and streams, in addition to streets named after the Nile and the Río Grande, etc., there are street signs in colonia fluvial for “Lago Superior,” “Lago Huron,” etc. The Cutzamala river is in Mexico, and is a river I had never heard of before.

As Fluvial is a central location, many pet owners were there on Wednesday from different colonias. Angelica, co-ower with Melissa Sunseon of AngeliCAT adoptions, brought seven beautiful rescue kittens to be neutered and spayed.

Irina brought a dog owned by a man who works at the gasoline station in Mojoneras, a dusty and underprivileged neighborhood thirty minutes southeast of Fluvial. Irina, who is a frequent visitor to the clinics, also brought lunch that she had prepared for the team – aguachile – “Estilo Sinaloa.” It is a dish composed of marinated shrimp, cucumber, onion and chile and is delicious!

OTHER DONATIONS: Richard Reed and his wife Susie hosted a dinner Friday night at Piazetta for more than a dozen animal advocates, including Marilyn and Livia from PurrProject and Soraya and her sister Almendra from Puro Gato. On Saturday both cat sanctuaries received checks from the Richard Reed Foundation for 95,000 pesos each. Puro Gato, AngeliCAT and Paraiso Felino, cat sanctuaries in the area of the Bay of Banderas, are regular visitors to PEACEAnimals clinics. Richard and Susie, part-time residents of Puerto Vallarta, have been extremely generous regarding their foundation´s gifts to animal and children´s charities.

All pet registration forms with signatures of owners or rescuers are submitted by Dr. Poli to the local department of health, with copies to PEACEAnimals.
