The white, frothy waves have been encouraging to some surfers, even though the rides are very short ones, and discouraging to swimmers who don´t want to be tossed onto the shore. Temperatures are projected to reach 80 degrees this week, with water temperature just 10 degrees cooler. Mexican winter.
NEW in town: The Los Mangos Market is held under tents and umbrellas on the lawn at Biblioteca los Mangos. The main intentions of the library are to offer opportunities to entrepreneurs and to raise visibility for the many excellent programs the library offers for children and adults, i.e., courses, workshops, film nights, performances, special events, etc. The los Mangos library is the only public library in Puerto Vallarta and receives no assistance from the government. NEW THIS WEEK! MEXICO HAS JUST PASSED A NATIONAL BAN ON DOG FIGHTING. The dog fighting won´t end quickly or easily- it´s a very lucrative and ugly business, and not just in Mexico. The law needs to be enforced and there will be intimidation. One of the thrills at clinics is to see a young Mexican man bring in a Pit Bull for spay or neuter.

COLONIA INFONAVIT – “Infonavit” is an acronym for “Instituto del Fondo Nacional de la Vivienda para los Trabajadores.” an entity which grants credit to eligble workers to obtain suitable and adequate housing. A twenty-minute drive from centro, the colonia is a mile or two east of Francisco Villa street (a main artery that leads from the stadium to the busy municipality of Pitillal), where one makes a right- hand turn at the Macroplaza stoplight.

The colonia is a quiet one and composed of mostly one-story cement houses, a scattering of small stores, and a bandstand next to a dusty soccer field where a woman had hung used clothing for sale Friday on the chain link fence, The clinic took place in a “police station” across the street from the soccer field and in front of a banana and jackfruit tree, both heavy with green fruit. The small, white, one-story cement building with an orange border at the bottom of it is unmarked and is used primarily as a communications center for the police. No policemen were in sight, but their mascot (a mix of German Shepherd and a few other things), who had been neutered the day before, was drinking water from a bucket placed outside the door.

Nice moments on Friday: A large, muscular man tied his two brindle dog sisters securely to the grill in the back of his truck, saying that he “wanted them to be very safe”… and a very cute (overused word) four-years old boy in a red t-shirt who to crawled in and out of an empty cat kennel. It amused him to shut himself in and call out “woof, woof.”
