Ten of us motored out in a panga from Boca de Tomatlán on Sunday morning with hopes of seeing dolphins.

BOCA DE TOMATLÁN |
We didn´t see even one, but we saw sea turtles, and large, graceful mantas. We swam far above a colorful colony of jellyfish and saw at least twenty whales breaching, diving with beautiful displays of flukes and as they lolled on their backs, the whales slapped the water with their dorsal fins, making loud thwaking sounds.

BALLENAS |
And then, as we swam, the unexpected happened. Two friends and I found ourselves at a safe distance from six or seven humpback whales. And though we hummed above and under water and blew bubbles to them, the whales never came any closer. One does wonder if the whale feels the same spiritual connection with all life that we did.
DOS AMIGAS Y YO NADANDO CON BALLENAS |
When we returned to Boca, we stopped for delicious 10-peso potato tacos at a road stand and fed a leftover bag of corn chips from the boat trip to a thin, young black dog whose teats were heavy with milk. Many dogs in Boca.

PITILLAL – Too late on Thursday, February 26th to see people registering pets and too early to see them return for them, I delivered the Cheeky Monkey donated lunches for the four-member vet team and two volunteers. We had a new volunteer that day, Eileen Appleton, who was being trained by Frank Ohly.

CLÍNICA EN EL MERCADO DE PITILLAL |
PEACEAnimals has had several clinics in Pitillal, the humming municipality that seems like a real town, with its dozens of shops and restaurants. A twenty-minute drive north of centro, the clinic took place in the large municipal mercado building next to the Pitillal river and tucked back just west of the on-ramp to Francisco Villa, one of the two main arteries into Vallarta. Instead of the aromas of the pizza, fruit and fish, etc. normally sold at the mercado, animal smells were in great evidence. This was an extremely successful clinic.

CLÍNICA EN UNA BODEGA ATRÁS DE PARQUE LOS SAUCES EN COLONIA LAS ARALIAS |
East of Costco about a dozen blocks is the comfortable colonia of las Aralias with its large, currently dry, stubbled grass park named los sauces (weeping willows). The clinic took place in the empty bodega belonging to animal advocate, Sofi Gonzalez. PEACEAnimals has held several clinics at this easy to find and very pleasant location, which is the probable reason for lower than normal sterilizations.
I was there on Thursday, when two male employees from the nearby acopio (no-kill local pound) arrived in the battered, white truck with the cage-like part in back for transporting dogs and cats. They had brought in seven female dogs in the morning from the acopio plus one large grey, obviously pregnant dog they had picked up on the street. She was operated on and found to be pregnant with ten fetuses. A lucky dog, she was taken to the acopio for adoption. When one of the acopio dogs was shaved in preparation for spaying, a tattoo was seen on her belly, indicating she had already been operated on. There was a beautiful, two year-old purebred Doberman and a very sweet, pretty brown and white purebred, year-and-a-half old Pit Bull. Her owner had brought her to the acopio with a purebred German Shepherd because he was on his way to jail for a long visit.

MONUMENT TO JUSTO SIERRA IN CAMPACHE IN THE YUCATAN |
Born in Campeche in the Yucatan in 1848, Justo Sierra was a prominent historian, journalist, poet and political figure. In 1861, Sierra moved to Mexico City, the the year the French invaded. At thirteen, he became a committed and lifelong militant liberal. Sierra is perhaps best remembered for his political biography of Benito Juarez and Evolución Politica del Pueblo Mexicano, considered by some to be the definitive statement of the age of the Reform in Mexico. Sierra served several terms as a respresentative of the federal Chamber of Deputies, and even though thoroughly anti-authoritarian, also served in other government posts, including Secretary of Public Education under President Porfirio Díaz. After Diáz was overthrown in 1911 and Francisco Madero elected at the outset of the Mexican Revolution, Sierra was chosen to serve as ambassador to Spain. He died in Madrid in 1912.
