PLAYA CONCHAS CHINAS – 13 DE SEPTIEMBRE |
Sultry, but not steamy weather when I arrived Tuesday in Vallarta after two-and-a-half weeks away. Skies alternate between blue with blossoms of white clouds or scattered grey rain clouds. The air is still moving and rainfalls are sometimes torrential.
Puerto Vallarta´s seven rivers are running fast and wide and brown and leaving dark trails in the bay. Green blades of grass are protruding between the stones on our cobbled, slanted street and the cicadas continue to buzz. Even with temperatures in the high 80´s and humidity at 85%, the almost daily rains keep September weather pleasant.

PLUMERIA TREE – DIAMOND HEAD, HONOLULU |
After visiting family in foggy and cold San Francisco, I flew to Honolulu to spend time with my mother, who lives on Diamond Head.
Every morning before dawn I walk up the gently sloping hill, past

SUNRISE ON DIAMOND HEAD – COCO HEAD IN THE DISTANCE |
He sits cross legged on the wall for four or five hours every day, visiting with passers by and taking turns with cats that sit on his lap wrapped in baby blankets. Wild roosters in back of him crow while homeless chickens lay eggs in the soft dirt in back of the nearby shrubbery. Across the busy street, more chickens and roosters share cat food with grey pigeons, furtive mongoose and multi-colored cats. I go further, passing the lighthouse to the spacious view spot at the top of the hill, for pink and golden sunrises and the sight of rows of waves and early morning surfers.
Most exciting moment was swimming at the north shore (famous for big waves in winter) off Haleiwa Alii beach. A turtle popped its head up very close to me, gulped some air, and disappeared. Near the Kamaaina beach at Diamond Head, a sign is posted warning of a mama seal and pup, but there were no sightings. I had seen the female lounging undisturbed and unperturbed on the sand in front of the Outrigger Canoe Club months ago.
At home, I saw one of our cats staring at something on one of bathroom shelves where towels are stacked. At the very back of the lowest shelf was something small, furry and brown curled up in a corner. Moving towels out of the way, I could see it was a tiny baby possum baring small, sharp teeth. Wrapping it up in a hand towel, I took it to Sabueso´s, where Dr. Eva picked it up by its tail and confirmed it was a well-fed male. The baby possum was taken to Rehabilitación y rescate de fauna Silvestre CALEV A.C.,where it will stay until old enough to release into the wild.

CLÍNICA EN BARRIO SANTA MARÍA |
Barrio (neighborhood) Santa María is a fifteen-minute drive northeast of centro, close to the canal off of the tunnel road (el libramiento). The clinic took place in the mobile clinic owned by and parked in front of the government offices of Asistencia Animal/Ecología. Next to the small office building in this quiet neighborhood is a grassy park, small playground and bandstand. An attractive mercado is nearby.

PARQUE EN BARRIO SANTA MARIA |
Thursday was my first clinic visit since the first clinic day in Pitillal on August 16th. Puddles of water were still on the cobbled streets in Santa María after Wednesday evening´s torrential rainfall. I was there to see (Santa) Elena arrive with thirteen cats and dogs from the nearby state of Nayarit. Elena said she would have brought more, but there was no more space in the truck.
Early Thursday morning I took our two dogs for a walk and a romp and a swim for myself at Conchas Chinas beach. A thin, medium size, black and white female dog joined us. Her teats indicated she had been a recent mother, and I asked the beach cleaners if the dog had an owner. “No, she´s a beach dog.” (This is a beach that has no restaurants or food vendors).

MADRUGADA – PLAYA CONCHAS CHINAS – DAWN |
She had given birth two months ago to 10 puppies and they didn´t know what had happened to them. I put a leash on the dog and she followed easily back to the car. I left her at the clinic for spaying, where (Santa) Elena had already dropped off another fifteen cats and dogs for surgery, and said she would be back with sixteen more on Saturday. I brought “Concha” (“Shell”) home to recover for a few days and then either find a place for her or return her where found. SPCAPV and Acopio are full. This dog would make a wonderful companion. Contact me if you are interested in adopting or can foster. [email protected]
