“DELIMITATIONS” – 47 SHEET METAL OBELISKS MARKING THE 1821 BORDER BETWEEN MEXICO AND THE UNITED STATES. THE “FOREVER” CONTRACT REGARDING THE BORDER LASTED 27 YEARS. |
The “Delimitations” exposition written about in Time magazine opened in Puerto Vallarta on October 7th at OPC (Oficina Proyectos Culturales). Vallarta is the first Mexican city to host this exhibit after the U.S. tour.
In 2014. artists Marcos Ramírez and David Taylor, accompanied by filmmaker José Inerzia, began their journey to trace the historical 1821 border between Mexico and the western territories of the United States. This border had previously only existed as a reference on historic maps and treaty documents. Installing the 1821 boundary with 47 numbered sheet metal obelisks, the artistic work is an imitation of the current international border between the U.S. and Mexico, which is marked by stone and iron obelisks.
On one of the cultural center´s walls for this exhibition, there is a quote taken from the best-selling memoirs of President Ulysses S. Grant, who fought in the Mexican-American war (1846-1848):
“I was bitterly opposed to the measure, and to this day, regard the war, which resulted, as one of the most unjust ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation…. I do not think there was ever a more wicked war… I thought so at the time.. only I had not moral courage enough to resign.”
With the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (officially entitled “The Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Limits and Settlement between the United States of American and the Mexican Republic”) signed on February 2, 1848, Mexico ceded 1.3 million acres – 51% of its land – to the U.S. A border river, the Río Grande, is still called the Río Bravo by Mexicans. A close Mexican friend of mine commented, “I don´t care about the old border – we have more than we can handle.”
DELIMITATIONS will be on display at OPC through January 13, 2018.

BEAUTIFUL BREEZES at the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens, a 40 minute drive south. Perched high up above the Tomatlán t river is a perfect spot for lunch and to admire the many hummingbirds that come to sip at the red feeders. The gardens are lush and gorgeous and a cool spot to walk the trails and take a dunk in the river. A 20% discount on all plants, vines and trees was offered this week-end was offered to members. (The very good boutique at the Gardens is one of the places where PEACEAnimals bags are carried. As they were sold out, I brought 20 more on Saturday).

ESPERANDO REGISTRAR – MEZCALES |
MEZCALES is a municipality in the state of Nayarit. Set back from Banderas Bay half-way between Puerto Vallarta and Buceria, it took 35 minutes to drive there on Thursday. The clinic took place on a quiet, cobbled street in a small building next to the delegación (town hall), where latecomers at 9 were waiting to register their pets. Many pet owners had arrived at 7 AM, and some of those who arrived later were asked to come back early on Friday or Saturday. As there weren´t enough kennels for all the animals that arrived on Thursday, owners stayed with their pets until they were sterilized and recovered from anesthesia. Unfortunately, a very feral female cat brought to the clinic shot out of one kennels when the door opened, ran down the street and couldn´t be caught. In my six years with PEACEAnimals, this is only the second time this has happened.

One of the dogs turned away was a five-year old tan, male Pit Bull with TVT (transmissible venereal tumor). Because the malignant tumors were on his genitals, it was impossible to neuter the dog. The last of the Laila SOS fund will be used to pay for five weeks of chemotherapy. Dr. Poli started the first treatment on Friday.
Regarding the LAILA SOS fund – The board of directors of PEACEAnimals voted unanimously to not solicit additional funds for rescues. There are other organizations that raise money for vet care, etc. PEACEAnimals will keep our focus on free spay/neuter clinics and education.
